Alibaba Steps Up Global Outreach to SMEs

Alibaba Group has recently intensified efforts to bring AI tools and training to SMEs across several countries, a pattern worth noting for WUSME’s network.

In Pakistan, MoUs signed during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Alibaba’s Hangzhou headquarters in May committed Alibaba.com and SMEDA to onboarding 2,000 SMEs onto a dedicated “Pakistan Pavilion” and training 10,000 businesses through its AI agent Accio Work, which launched shortly after (Fintech News Pakistan, The Friday Times, May 2026). In mid-June, an Alibaba.com delegation met Pakistani officials to present further AI-based solutions under the “DigiSME Pakistan” initiative (Dawn, 16 June 2026).

In Malaysia, Alibaba Cloud opened a new public cloud region in Johor on 9 June, explicitly framed around giving SMEs access to lower-cost AI services, building on a SME Digitalisation Program launched with MDEC in December 2025 (The Edge Malaysia, Fintech News Malaysia).

Across Indonesia and Vietnam, Alibaba Cloud has run “SME AI Growth Day” events introducing local businesses to its Qwen and Model Studio AI tools, while Indonesia has become the platform’s leading source of AI-application buyer demand in the region (Alibaba.com Seller Blog, March 2026).

In the UAE, Alibaba.com made its first appearance at Gulfood 2026 in Dubai, presenting AI-driven sourcing tools to Gulf SMEs and announcing plans for localised UAE services through 2026.

The recurring template, government MoUs followed by AI training and platform onboarding targets, offers a useful reference point for SME digitalisation efforts elsewhere.
