ICSB Releases Top 10 Global Trends Shaping MSMEs in 2026
The International Council for Small Business (ICSB) has published its annual Top 10 Trends for MSMEs in 2026, authored by ICSB President & CEO Dr. Ayman El Tarabishy. The report offers a global outlook on the forces reshaping micro, small and medium enterprises this year, from the rise of the solo entrepreneur to the growing role of “humanized AI” as a strategic companion rather than a replacement for human judgment.
Among the key trends highlighted:
- AI as an equalizer — MSMEs that treat AI as a creative and strategic partner, rather than a threat, are gaining a competitive edge.
- Micro-multinationals — thanks to digital platforms and cross-border e-commerce, small firms increasingly go global from day one.
- Persistent bureaucracy — despite years of digitalization, red tape remains one of the biggest barriers to MSME growth, with entrepreneurs calling for simpler, more accessible public systems.
- Women entrepreneurs scaling up — digital financing models and global networks continue to expand opportunities for women-led businesses, though systemic barriers remain.
- The value of the human touch — as automation spreads, authenticity, craftsmanship and personal relationships are becoming a key differentiator for small businesses.
ICSB notes that MSMEs account for the vast majority of businesses worldwide and remain central to job creation, community resilience and inclusive economic growth — themes closely aligned with WUSME’s own mission and advocacy work.
