Women’s Day, equal opportunities and gender equality

REPUBLIC OF SAN MARINO – 8th March, 2017 – The International Women’s Day, celebrated every year around the world on 8th March, 2017, was established to remember the political, social and economic achievements of women in history, as well as to reflect on the role of women in contemporary society and to turn the spotlight on discrimination, the precarious status of women and the violence which even today they experience, especially in the field of gender equality, a fundamental principle included in the list of global sustainability goals to be achieved by 2030, as reaffirmed by UN Women (the United Nations agency for gender equality and empowerment). A strong theme, which constantly returns very timely, and leads to a reflection on the role of women in the world of work. Technological progress and globalization, if, on one hand, in fact, create new opportunities, on the other feed labour irregularities and income inequality.
WUSME wishes, therefore, to celebrate the International Women’s Day with a focus on women empowerment around the world, as engine for the economic, social and political development. A principle which highlights the importance of employment in the labor market, actions in favor of women engaged in Small and Medium Enterprises through professional qualification, participation in decision-making process, enhancement in education and training and achievement of equal opportunities and gender equality. The latter is not only a basic human right, but also the necessary condition for a prosperous and sustainable world.
